I’m very excited about this recipe! I love apple crisp….or apple crumble, whichever name you use is fine with me. They’re both filled with sugary, buttery, cinnamon apples and topped with a crispy, crunchy, crumbly crust! Heat that bad boy up and top with ice cream…oh my God, it’s just too good!
Ahh the sweet, crumbly topping…
But, the real question is, the preparation. Do you like the apples sliced or chopped? Do you like an oat topping or more of a shortbread cookie like topping? I am definitely all about the cookie like topping! My only complaint about apple crisp most of the time, is that it never has enough topping! Or even that the topping is sometimes to oatmealy and light. I mean the apples are great, but to me they are only 50% of this team!
So, I bring you my version of a perfect apple crisp! Filled with gooey spiced apples and topped with an amazingly crunchy, chewy, shortbread like topping! Feel free to prepare the apples however you like and add more cinnamon, or nutmeg, or cloves. If you for some crazy reason are not like me, and don’t love a thicker crisp part, feel free to half that part of the recipe so it’ll be a lot lighter and more appley. Enjoy!

This super delicious classic recipe with a double crispy, crunchy topping!
- 6 Granny Smith apples, sliced
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 tablespoons butter, melted
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon, ground
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 6-8 tablespoons butter, melted
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
In a large saucepan over medium high heat, add sliced apples and all the other apple section ingredients and stir well until everything is melted and apples become tender, about 5-10 min.
In a 9" pie plate, pour cooked apples in and spread evenly.
In a medium size mixing bowl, add all the crisp ingredient except for better and stir well.
Add melted butter and stir until big clumps begin to form.
Using your hand, take the topping and crumble it in your fingers to make big and small chunks of topping and distribute them evenly over the apples.
Place in the oven under a baking tray, just in case it spills over, and bake for about 30-40 min. Or until the topping is golden brown in color. Allow to cool a bit and serve warm with vanilla ice cream!
If you don't like a thicker a topping, feel free to half the crisp portion of the recipe! Also, you can slice your apples thinly like I do, or more thickly or even in chunks! This is a very sweet recipe. The salt balances it out a bit, but also feel free to reduce the sugar by 1/3 if you'd like.
